Fiery Four‑Vehicle Crash on San Jose Highway Kills Child and Adult

Two people — an adult and a child — were killed after a four‑vehicle collision ignited into flames on a San Jose highway on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The crash occurred shortly after 10:50 a.m. north of Curtner Avenue. California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigators say the wreck involved two Teslas, a Lexus and a Toyota Sienna. Following the collision, both Teslas and the Lexus caught fire.

"It was a pretty robust dispatch from the Fire Department, and upon arrival, crews did find multiple vehicles involved with fire," Battalion Chief Bennett Yendery said. "A lot of smoke obscuring the situation initially, but when I did gain visual, all three [vehicles] were involved in fire."

Fire crews prioritized containing the blaze. Authorities reported that the presence of the Teslas and their lithium‑ion batteries did not create additional difficulties and that the fire was extinguished within an expected timeframe.

CHP confirmed the two fatalities — an adult and a child — were passengers in the Lexus. The Lexus driver and at least one person from a Tesla were hospitalized; another person was also taken to hospital. The driver of the Toyota Sienna cooperated with investigators and was released at the scene. The current conditions of the hospitalized individuals have not been made public.

All northbound lanes near the crash site were temporarily closed; CHP reopened the lanes by 3:45 p.m. local time. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. CHP said driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not suspected, and no identities have been released.

Authorities continue to investigate the chain of events that led to the collision and fire. More information will be released as investigators complete their work.
