Boyfriend Had Planned Christmas Eve Proposal for 21-Year-Old Killed in Dundalk Crash

A funeral was held on Dec. 2 for 21-year-old Chloe Hipson, a Scottish college student who was among five people killed in a two-car collision on Ardee Road near Dundalk, County Louth, on Nov. 15.

At the service at Daldowie Crematorium near Glasgow, Reverend Peter Davidge revealed that Hipson’s partner, known as AJ, had intended to propose to her on Christmas Eve. Davidge said AJ had already asked Chloe’s father and brother for their blessing, calling the gesture "a lovely, gentlemanly and courteous thing to do." The revelation brought a particularly poignant note to the funeral.

Life in Ireland and the move

Hipson, from Lanarkshire, was studying at Dundalk Institute of Technology. She met AJ in 2024 while travelling with friends in Ibiza and moved to Ireland with him and their dog, Poppy, in April 2025. Davidge told mourners that Chloe had "fallen in love" with Ireland and was thriving and happy in her new life.

Victims and response

Also killed in the Nov. 15 collision were 23-year-old Chloe McGee and 21-year-old Shay Duffy, both from Carrickmacross; 23-year-old Alan McCluskey, of Drumconrath; and 23-year-old Dylan Commins, of Ardee. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from family, friends and the local community.

"We, today here in Scotland, think of all their families. And of those beautiful young people," Davidge said at the service.

An Garda Síochána confirmed the identities of the five victims and said two people who were in the second vehicle — a man and a woman — were treated in hospital for injuries described as not life-threatening. Superintendent Charlie Armstrong offered condolences on behalf of the force to the families of all five adults who lost their lives.

The funeral remembered Chloe for her kindness and the positive mark she made in the time she lived in Ireland. Family and friends recalled a young woman who embraced her new life abroad and was planning a future with her partner.
