Downtown Burlington City Market Closes Café for Winter Over Safety Concerns; Reopening Tentatively Planned for March

Burlington’s downtown City Market will close its café area for the winter starting December 3 due to 'a number of safety and security challenges' cited by the co‑op. The closure will allow staff to reassess the space, with a tentative reopening planned for March if conditions improve. The market's public restroom will also be closed temporarily; it was shut in a similar way last winter. Customers are advised to check the co‑op's website or social channels for updates and assistance.

City Market temporarily shutters café area for the winter

Burlington’s downtown City Market on South Winooski Avenue will close its café area for the winter season beginning December 3. The co‑op announced the temporary closure in a statement citing what it described as 'a number of safety and security challenges' that prompted the decision.

'Safety remains our highest priority, and we believe this is the best way forward as we take the time to reassess the space and re-open, tentatively in March, when we feel that it is safe for our customers and staff,' the co‑op said.

The market also said the public restroom will be closed temporarily. Officials noted the restroom was closed in a similar way last winter while the space was reassessed.

The co‑op is asking customers to check its website and social channels for updates on reopening plans and any changes to services. Customers with questions about orders, catering, accessibility, or other needs are encouraged to contact the market directly.
