Father and 9-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Mansfield — Police Probe Possible Murder‑Suicide

Authorities in Mansfield, Ohio, say a 40-year-old man and his 9-year-old son were found with gunshot wounds inside a home on Nov. 29 in what investigators are treating as a possible murder‑suicide.

Officers responded to a report of two individuals with gunshot wounds around noon and located the pair inside the residence. The boy was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, where he later died; the father was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives from the Mansfield Division of Police and the Richland County Coroner's Office continue to investigate the circumstances, and the names of the deceased have not been released out of respect for the family.

Witnesses and neighbors react

The father’s girlfriend was in the home at the time of the shooting but did not appear to be physically injured, according to neighbors. Local residents who knew the family expressed shock and disbelief at the idea that the father could have harmed his child.

“I don’t know. I just heard a pop. She was upstairs,” said a neighbor who spoke with the girlfriend shortly after the incident.

“He was an amazing guy. He loved his son,” another neighbor said, adding that the man had been a landlord and friend who "gave people chances."

“I don’t believe it at all to save my soul. He would never harm his own child at all whatsoever,” a neighbor added.

Investigation ongoing

Police described the event as a "possible" murder‑suicide but emphasized the investigation is active and ongoing. Officials have not released further details pending the inquiry and notification of next of kin.
