Authorities have identified four people killed when a stolen vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck their car on Highway 83 in Douglas County, Colorado. The victims were Alvin Corado, 35; his children MaKenlee Corado, 11, and Toretto Corado, 8; and family friend Jase Green, 12. A 31-year-old Denver man accused of carjacking the vehicle has not been publicly named.
The crash occurred just before 4:40 p.m. near milepost 40.5. Law enforcement says the stolen Toyota hatchback had been taken roughly an hour earlier after an alleged carjacking at the Nine Mile Station in Aurora. Authorities say the suspect pulled a woman from the Toyota’s driver seat and fled in the car.
While traveling on Highway 83, the suspect reportedly lost control of the Toyota, over-corrected, rolled and crossed into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with the Corado family's Ford sedan. The suspect and the four occupants of the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the rear — 13-year-old Mia Corado and a 14-year-old boy who is the brother of Jase Green — were airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Mia Corado’s condition
Mia’s mother, Marissa Corado, provided an update saying Mia sustained extensive injuries including a lacerated liver, fractured pelvis, punctured diaphragm, broken arm and finger, esophageal tears, fractured ribs, a broken back and lung contusions. Mia was recently moved into a wheelchair but continues to face heart complications and fluid in her lungs. According to her mother, Mia was conscious through much of the incident, remembers the crash and has been deeply traumatized.
Identity withheld
Both the Aurora Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol confirmed they will not release the suspected driver’s name. Officials acknowledged the suspect has a criminal history but did not provide a reason for withholding his identity; the Douglas County coroner said the name will not be made public at the request of the suspect’s family. An agency spokesperson also declined to comment on the suspect’s immigration status.
Community response and funeral plans
The family plans a vigil in Colorado Springs for MaKenlee and Toretto, and a joint funeral service is being arranged in South Dakota pending Mia’s recovery and ability to travel. A GoFundMe page has been created to assist with funeral and memorial costs, Mia’s medical and ICU expenses, and Marissa Corado’s lost wages while she cares for her daughter. Sabin Middle School in Colorado Springs, where MaKenlee attended, described the loss as "incomprehensible" and asked the community to keep the family in their thoughts.
“We were told by those on the scene that [Mia] was awake, but we were not prepared for all of the details… The things Mia saw and went through are something that no person should ever have to witness, let alone a 13-year-old witnessing her own family,” Marissa Corado wrote in a social media update.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing as law enforcement seeks to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the Toyota losing control. Families and community members continue to offer support as the surviving teens receive care and the Corado family prepares for services for the deceased.
