Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47, a U.S. Navy sailor stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Barking Sands, died after rescuing two children who were struggling in high surf at Waiapua‘a Bay on Kaua‘i.

According to the Kaua‘i Police Department, Diaz entered the water to assist the children. Both children were brought safely to shore, but Diaz later ran into trouble and was pulled from the ocean by personnel from the Ocean Safety Bureau and the Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department.

Rescuers performed lifesaving efforts at the scene and Diaz was transported to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death; investigators stated that foul play is not suspected.

Capt. Robert Prince, commanding officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, said the base is heartbroken by the loss and extended condolences to Diaz's family, friends and shipmates. He also thanked emergency responders, fellow sailors and family members who provided immediate assistance.

Diaz, originally from Florida and 47 years old, is being remembered for his quick action and selfless attempt to save the children. The base has said it will support his family and those affected during this difficult time.

Authorities continue to review the circumstances, and the Kaua‘i Police Department has offered its condolences to Diaz's loved ones.
