What Happened
According to a statement to PEOPLE from a Carnival spokesperson, the child 'briefly walked away from her mother and fell into the water,' and the mother 'immediately jumped in after her.' A TikTok posted Dec. 21 by user @chelspiers, filmed from a stateroom aboard the nearby Carnival Conquest, appears to show the aftermath. The video shows a crowd gathered along the pier at Celebration Key on the south side of Grand Bahama Island, then crew members in beige and blue coveralls tossing life rings, lowering a ladder and pulling the child from the water. Onlookers applauded as the child was lifted to safety and taken into the arms of a nearby woman.
Aftermath and Response
About 30 seconds after the child was rescued, crew helped the adult who had jumped in climb the ladder. Staff wrapped towels around her shoulders as she recovered emotionally. In the comments to the original post, the TikTok creator later shared a message from the mother saying they are 'traumatized, but fine.' Carnival confirmed the ship's medical team evaluated both and that they are doing well.
