Carrickfergus to Remove Prince Andrew’s Name from Main Road After Royal Titles Revoked

Mid and East Antrim council has unanimously voted to remove Prince Andrew’s name from a main road in Carrickfergus, acting after King Charles III revoked some of his brother’s titles. Councillor Aaron Skinner said Andrew Mountbatten no longer represents the town’s values. Residents largely supported the move and the council will hold a public consultation on replacement names, followed by a further vote.

Carrickfergus to Remove Prince Andrew’s Name from Main Road After Royal Titles Revoked

A local council in Northern Ireland has voted unanimously to remove Prince Andrew’s name from a main road in Carrickfergus, making Mid and East Antrim the first council in the UK to take this step since the King revoked some of the ex-prince’s titles.

What happened

On Monday councillors voted to rename the thoroughfare formerly known as Prince Andrew Way, located about 10 miles (16 kilometres) northeast of Belfast. Councillor Aaron Skinner, who supported the change, said:

"Andrew Mountbatten no longer represents the values of Carrickfergus."

Why the change

The decision follows King Charles III’s recent move to strip some of his younger brother’s titles amid the latter’s widely reported links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Local councillors said the palace’s action made it appropriate for the council to reconsider public dedications that bear his name.

Local reaction and next steps

Residents interviewed welcomed the decision and some said it was overdue. Lesley Rockett, a care worker, said:

"The street should have been renamed as soon as the Virginia Giuffre book was published. I've just read it and it's really damning in my opinion."
Retired power station worker William Foster added:
"It reflects on the local community, so should be changed."

One nameplate still showing the ex-prince’s name was reportedly daubed with black paint several months ago. The council will run a public consultation before voting on a new name; options mentioned include Princess Catherine and the late Queen Elizabeth II. Several town councils in England have said they are considering similar actions, though none have yet voted to do so.

What to watch: the council expects a public consultation and a further vote in the coming months to decide the replacement name.
