Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha, will spend Wednesday serving Thanksgiving meals to soldiers at Fort Campbell. A Marine veteran, Vance is also expected to deliver remarks to service members during the visit as part of an early holiday observance.

Visit details

Fort Campbell sits on the Kentucky–Tennessee border and is home to more than 30,000 active-duty military personnel. During the visit, Vance and his wife will serve meals, meet with service members and unit leaders, and take part in morale-boosting activities common to holiday military visits.

This is Vance's second trip to the Tennessee region in recent weeks; he appeared at a Republican National Committee fundraiser near Maryville on Nov. 14. President Trump is expected to spend Thanksgiving at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Why it matters: Holiday appearances by senior officials are customary opportunities to recognize service members and their families, highlight military readiness and offer gratitude for their service during a season when many are away from home.
