JFK Terminal 4 Systems Outage Briefly Disrupts Passenger Processing; Internet Restored

Terminal 4 at JFK experienced a systems outage around noon Sunday, producing long, stagnant lines and delays for passengers who reported waits beginning around 11:20 a.m. Technicians assessed the issue and restored the terminal's internet connection a few hours later. JFK Terminal 4 Systems Outage Briefly Disrupts Passenger Processing; Internet Restored

Travelers at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 4 experienced delays Sunday after terminal systems went "down" around noon, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported. The disruption produced long, stagnant lines for passengers, with reports of delays beginning as early as 11:20 a.m.

Issue resolved: Technicians assessed the situation and restored the terminal’s internet connection a few hours later, allowing processing to resume. The Port Authority said its team was working to get passengers moving safely and as quickly as possible.

Airline operations: The Port Authority noted that Delta Air Lines, which operates out of Terminal 4, was not affected by the outage.

"An assessment was conducted by technicians and the internet connection is now back online," the Port Authority said. "The team is working on getting passengers on their way safely and as soon as possible."

Passengers posted videos and firsthand accounts on social media documenting long lines and limited information. Traveler Claudia Hernandez shared video footage showing slow-moving queues and said it appeared airport servers were down. "We got here at 11:20 a.m. and the line has not moved at all," she wrote after being notified of the system issue when checking bags.

Another passenger, Jeffrey Ashton, who was attempting to fly standby, described chaotic scenes as lines stretched and barely advanced. He reported "tense moments" between airline staff and travelers and said announcements were sparse, leaving many to rely on second- or thirdhand updates.

Context: The outage occurred as Thanksgiving travel ramps up and follows a recent 43-day government shutdown that strained the aviation system. During that period, air traffic controllers and other essential airport workers went without pay for more than a month, and the Federal Aviation Administration ordered reductions in service at some major hubs.

Airport officials encourage travelers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information and to arrive early during busy travel periods.
