Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Gaza After Reported Attack on IDF Troops

Israeli forces conducted airstrikes in Gaza after an individual reportedly fired on soldiers after crossing an aid route, which the IDF called a breach of the ceasefire that began on Oct. 10. Gaza health authorities reported at least 14 dead and 45 wounded, including many children. Israel said it also killed several militants in Rafah and northern Gaza during related incidents. Hamas denied violating the truce and urged international pressure to enforce the agreement.

Israel's military said on Saturday it carried out airstrikes against Hamas operatives in Gaza after an individual fired on Israeli soldiers, marking the latest breach of the ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10. Gaza health authorities reported at least 14 people killed and 45 wounded in the strikes, including children.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said an "armed terrorist" used a road typically reserved for incoming aid to cross the yellow line established under the recent ceasefire. That boundary keeps Gaza's border zone under Israeli control while the area beyond it is intended as a humanitarian safe zone. According to the IDF, the person opened fire at soldiers and was killed; no Israeli casualties were reported.

In response to what it described as a "blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement," the IDF said it struck "Hamas terror targets in the Gaza Strip." In a separate statement, the military said its forces killed three people it called "terrorists" in the Rafah area and killed two others after firing on four individuals who crossed into Israeli-held areas in northern Gaza and advanced toward soldiers.

Hamas accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and said the terms of the agreement had been changed. The group called on the United States to press Israel to honor the ceasefire and to confront actions it said would undermine the truce.

Medical officials reported several casualties from strikes on populated areas. Rami Mhanna, managing director of Shifa Hospital, said a strike on a vehicle in Gaza City's Rimal neighborhood killed seven people and wounded 18; those victims were taken to Shifa. Mohamed Abu Selmiya, the hospital director, said many of the wounded were children.

Hospitals in central Gaza reported further losses: a strike near Al-Awda Hospital killed at least three people and wounded 11; a separate strike in Nuseirat camp killed one child and wounded 16; and Al-Aqsa Hospital reported a strike in Deir al-Balah that killed three people, including a woman. Local health authorities provided these casualty figures.

The IDF said its Southern Command troops remain deployed according to the ceasefire arrangements and that they "will continue to operate to remove any immediate threat." The incidents underscore fragile implementation of the Oct. 10 ceasefire and the risk of renewed escalation.
