Trump and Mamdani meet at the White House; Kilmeade calls it a 'love fest'
Brian Kilmeade, a morning television host, said President Donald Trump and New York City mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani "got along fantastic" during a Friday meeting at the White House, and suggested that Republican J.D. Vance was "jealous." Kilmeade also speculated that Mr. Trump might consider Mamdani as a potential running mate.
Kilmeade told viewers that Trump sounded complimentary toward Mamdani and that the two exchanged a "friendly handshake" during their conversation. He described the atmosphere as markedly different from the heated exchanges the pair had in recent months.
Earlier in the campaign season, Trump warned he might withhold federal funding from New York City if Mamdani won. On his platform Truth Social in August, Trump wrote that Mamdani "is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great city" and accused him of promoting "fake communist promises."
'I think you're going to have, hopefully, a really great mayor,' Trump said in the Oval Office following the meeting. 'The better he does, the happier I am.'
Trump added that 'there's no difference in party, there's no difference in anything,' and said the administration would help Mamdani work toward 'a strong and very safe New York.' When reporters asked whether he would live in New York City under Mamdani's leadership, Trump replied, 'Yeah, I would. I really would. Especially after the meeting.'
Kilmeade summarized the encounter as unusually cordial: 'This was a love fest. This was a respect fest.' The meeting appears to have softened the tone between Trump and Mamdani after weeks of public sparring.
