Fatal Ramming and Stabbing at Gush Etzion Junction Leaves One Dead, Three Wounded

At least one Israeli was killed and three others were wounded in a combined vehicle-ramming and stabbing attack at Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank on Tuesday, emergency services said.

Incident

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the event as a ramming-and-stabbing attack that targeted a group of people at the junction. Magen David Adom paramedic Elad Pas said one man died at the scene of a "severe stab wound." A woman was reported in serious condition and two additional victims were in moderate condition.

The IDF said soldiers shot and killed two attackers at the scene. Officials also reported that several explosive devices were discovered in the vehicle used by the assailants; Israel Border Police bomb disposal teams were working to neutralize the materials.

Official Responses

Opposition leader Yair Lapid called the attack "severe," saying it claimed "the life of a young Israeli citizen." He expressed support for the IDF and security forces, offered condolences to the victim's family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad praised the attack, describing it as "in response to the ongoing crimes committed by settler gangs and the occupation army against our people," though it did not claim direct responsibility. Hamas also praised the incident without claiming it, calling it an "inevitable outcome" of Israel's actions against Palestinians and their holy sites.

Context

Stabbings and vehicle-ramming attacks by Palestinian attackers have occurred periodically at checkpoints, transit hubs and other busy public locations in Israel, Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Violence in the West Bank has risen in recent weeks. A United Nations report released earlier this month recorded at least 264 attacks by Israeli settlers in October, the highest monthly total since the UN began tracking such incidents in 2006. The report and other accounts say Palestinians and activists have been assaulted or detained while trying to harvest olives. In recent days a West Bank mosque was set on fire and daubed with graffiti, and settlers torched Palestinian vehicles and homes in one village following the dismantling of illegal outpost structures by Israeli forces.
