Two Palestinian Teenagers Shot Dead by Israeli Forces in Kufr Aqab on Jerusalem's Outskirts

Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinian teenagers on the outskirts of Jerusalem in the town of Kufr Aqab, the Palestinian health ministry said on Friday. The victims were identified as 18-year-old Amr Khaled Ahmed Al-Marbou and 16-year-old Sami Ibrahim Sami Mashayekh, both described by authorities as having been hit by live gunfire.

Israeli police said they opened fire at "four individuals who posed an immediate threat to the personnel" during overnight confrontations in which dozens of people reportedly threw stones and fireworks. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it transported two people from Kufr Aqab to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Hundreds of mourners — mostly young men — attended funeral processions for Marbou and Mashayekh. The bodies were draped in Palestinian flags and their heads wrapped in traditional black-and-white keffiyehs as relatives recited prayers and crowds chanted in the streets.

A friend, Oday al-Shurfa, said he witnessed the shooting during clashes between local residents and Israeli forces. "He was just standing there, not holding or throwing stones — just like the others," Shurfa said, adding that Marbou was struck "in the chest, in the heart" and collapsed.

A relative who declined to be named said Marbou had been with four others: "one of them was also killed, another is in critical condition," and a third suffered a serious hand injury. "What kind of brutality is this?" she said.

Background

Kufr Aqab is considered part of East Jerusalem — an area that Israel has annexed and that is separated from the rest of the city by a barrier. Because of that separation the town receives limited municipal services from Jerusalem and is not fully served by nearby Palestinian municipalities such as Ramallah and Al-Bireh.

Violence in the West Bank has risen sharply since the Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent Gaza war in October 2023. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The circumstances of the shootings are under continuing scrutiny amid competing accounts from witnesses and security forces.
