Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) introduced a resolution this week seeking to censure Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) amid allegations that include stolen valor and domestic violence.
Speaking on the House floor, Mace outlined claims that service members have disputed parts of Mills’s military record and described a February incident in which police were called to Mills’s Washington residence. She said the allegations—if true—raise serious questions about whether Mills should continue to serve on the House Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
"Rep. Mills' record is tainted by allegations of stolen valor, domestic abuse, and questionable arms dealings while serving in Congress," Mace said, urging House leadership to consider removing him from committee assignments.
Mace recounted reports that challenge details of how Mills earned a Bronze Star, and she summarized allegations of domestic violence that have been made against him. Mills has publicly denied all allegations.
According to the account Mace read on the floor, on February 19, 2025, Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue Southwest around 1:15 p.m. for a reported assault at Mills’s residence. Police reports obtained in connection with the matter say a 27-year-old woman accused a significant other of repeatedly grabbing, shoving and pushing her over the course of a year and showed officers bruising on her arm.
Mace also noted that Mills was reportedly served with a civil restraining order last month that requires him to stay away from his ex-girlfriend; Mills denies the allegations underlying that order.
Republican lawmakers reportedly discussed the matter in private party meetings this week, and a planned immediate censure vote was not held. Mace said she intended to press for accountability in the House.
The resolution and the allegations are likely to deepen intra-party tensions as House leaders weigh how to respond while the claims remain under investigation.
