32-year-old Kamela Johnson missing since Oct. 8
A 32-year-old mother of four, Kamela Johnson, has been missing since the evening of Oct. 8, when she was last seen leaving her Jacksonville, Florida, home reportedly to go to a nearby gas station, her family tells PEOPLE.
What the family says
Kamela’s mother, Sharonda Muller, describes the disappearance as out of character. "She has never, ever disappeared before. She has never not tried to reach out to family," Muller said. Kamela’s children, ages 6 to 11, are being cared for by their grandmother and are asking questions the family cannot yet answer.
Timeline and investigation
According to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office incident report dated Nov. 1 and reviewed by PEOPLE, Kamela was last seen by her husband, Darrell Johnson, on the evening of Oct. 8. Darrell told police she was likely headed to Gate gas station, 5508 Moncrief Road, a place he said she frequented. He filed a missing-person report on Oct. 16, a little over a week later.
Kamela’s ex-boyfriend, Jeremy Womack, also reported her missing to authorities by Nov. 1 after not hearing from her since around Oct. 8. Womack said he received texts on Oct. 16 from an unfamiliar number claiming to be Kamela; when he asked the sender to identify themselves, he received no reply. Investigators traced that number and linked it to two people who, according to the report, have no known connection to Kamela.
Officers canvassed the Gate station and spoke with customers. One person told police they saw Kamela "about a week ago" but could not recall the exact day; other patrons said they had not seen her in about two weeks. The officer who followed up on those leads reported no additional information about her whereabouts.
Family reaction and next steps
Muller says local police have indicated that because Kamela is an adult with no documented mental-health crisis, she is currently being treated as someone who may have left voluntarily rather than as an immediate criminal matter. The family emphasizes that, while Kamela struggled with substance abuse and sometimes spent time near known drug locations, she loved her children and had strong ties to home.
The family has organized a community search party for Saturday, Nov. 22, and is urging anyone with information to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 904-630-0500. The JSO confirmed to PEOPLE that Kamela remained missing as of Nov. 18.
“If she's out there and someone has her, we want her back,” Muller said. “She has a family that loves her, that misses her.”
