A woman is recovering after police say she was struck with a hammer while jogging in Bob Woodruff Park in Plano, Texas, on Nov. 13. The attack reportedly occurred at about 5 p.m.; the victim was transported to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Plano police later identified 17-year-old Sergio Noe de Nova Duarte as a suspect after linking him to several items recovered at the scene, including a hammer and duct tape. Authorities say the victim fought back and the attacker fled the scene before officers arrived.

Duarte was taken into custody and faces state charges including aggravated kidnapping and bodily injury, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Immigration officials placed an arrest detainer on him after his most recent arrest.

DHS records reported that Duarte entered the United States on a B2 tourist visa in 2016 and was ordered removed to Mexico later that year. The agency also said Duarte had prior arrests for burglary and larceny in 2024 and was subsequently released with a notice to appear before an immigration judge in 2026.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, in a DHS statement, said the suspect 'should have never been loose in our communities' and criticized the earlier decision to release him. The statement called for stronger enforcement to prevent similar incidents.

The investigation remains active. Police and DHS have not released additional details about the motive or all evidence recovered. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Plano Police Department.
