Long lines form at Urban League drive‑thru to aid tornado survivors and families in need
ST. LOUIS — The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis hosted a special drive‑thru food distribution Saturday that drew a line of cars nearly half a mile long as volunteers handed out relief packages to families affected by recent storms and economic uncertainty.
The distribution, held from noon to 3 p.m. at the Urban League’s headquarters at 1408 N. Kingshighway Boulevard, saw some drivers arriving hours before the event. By 10 a.m., dozens of vehicles had queued from the organization’s drive‑thru entrance to Page Boulevard and past Euclid Avenue.
Volunteers worked steadily throughout the three‑hour event, distributing thousands of packages filled with nonperishable food, toiletries and other household essentials to tornado survivors, SNAP recipients and other households in need.
Although SNAP benefits in Missouri have resumed following the recent federal government shutdown, organizers say many families remain unsettled after weeks of uncertainty and are still coping with the lingering effects of tornado recovery.
"This is about meeting urgent needs with dignity and compassion,"
Michael P. McMillan, President & CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, added:
"We remain committed to stabilizing families and communities during this challenging time."
