Suspect Arrested Following Days-Long Manhunt

A suspect accused of ransacking the New Jersey office of acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba has been arrested after a multi-day manhunt. Authorities say the individual attempted to enter Habba’s office while carrying a baseball bat, was turned away, then returned without the bat and smashed federal property in the office waiting area before fleeing.

Pam Bondi — the former Florida attorney general — posted on X that the suspect had been caught, writing: "No one will get away with threatening or intimidating our great US Attorneys or the destruction of their offices." Habba also took to X to announce the arrest, thanking the FBI and U.S. Marshals and adding, "Now justice will handle him."

An FBI bulletin had warned the person “should be considered dangerous.” Earlier in the week the FBI released a suspect’s name and offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the individual’s capture. Officials have not publicly identified the arrested person.

According to the FBI wanted poster, the suspect faces federal charges including possession of a dangerous weapon in a federal facility and depredation of federal property. Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack.

Alina Habba has served as New Jersey’s acting U.S. attorney since March. She had been a personal attorney to former president Donald Trump and remained in the acting role after a nomination was withdrawn; in August a federal judge ruled she was serving improperly without Senate confirmation and should be replaced, and an appeals court is now considering that ruling. Since taking office, Habba has pursued several high-profile and politically sensitive investigations and prosecutions, which have drawn criticism and legal challenges from Democratic officials.

What happens next: The arrested suspect is expected to be charged in federal court. The FBI and U.S. Marshals will continue their investigation, and authorities say any additional information will be released as it becomes available.
