Double‑decker bus crashes into bus facility in central Stockholm
Stockholm, Nov. 14 — A double‑decker bus struck a bus facility in the Östermalm district of central Stockholm at about 3 p.m. on Friday, killing several people and seriously injuring others, Swedish law enforcement officials said.
Police said the only person on board was the driver, who was arrested at the scene. Authorities cordoned off Valhallavägen, near the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), while emergency workers and investigators attended the scene.
The bus is owned by Transdev, the France‑based global transport company, which confirmed the incident. Swedish broadcaster SVT, citing EuroNews, reported that the vehicle was not scheduled to be in service at the time of the crash.
The cause of the crash has not been determined and remains under active investigation. Police said they are treating the incident as a possible case of aggravated or involuntary manslaughter while inquiries continue.
"I have received the tragic news that several people have lost their lives and been injured at a bus stop in central Stockholm," Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X. "These were people who may have been on their way home to family, friends or a quiet evening at home."
Kristersson added that police and rescue services "now have a very difficult and important job to do." Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch said she was closely following developments and remains in contact with relevant authorities.
Officials asked the public to show consideration while emergency teams work and to avoid the cordoned area to allow rescue and investigative work to proceed without hindrance.
