Double-decker bus crashes into bus stop in central Stockholm
Date: Nov. 14 — Around 3 p.m., a double-decker bus plowed into a bus facility in the Östermalm neighborhood of central Stockholm, killing multiple people and leaving others seriously injured, Swedish police said.
Officials said the vehicle carried only the driver at the time of the collision; that person was taken into custody. Authorities cordoned off Valhallavägen near the Royal Institute of Technology while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Police have not released a precise toll of the dead and wounded and said the cause of the crash was not immediately known. Investigators are treating the incident as a possible case of aggravated or involuntary manslaughter and are continuing their inquiries.
The bus is owned by Transdev, the France-based global transport company, which confirmed it was involved in the fatal incident. Swedish public broadcaster SVT, citing EuroNews, reported the vehicle was reportedly not scheduled to be in service when the crash occurred.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson posted on X that he had 'received the tragic news that several people have lost their lives and been injured at a bus stop in central Stockholm,' adding that the victims may have been 'on their way home to family, friends or a quiet evening at home.' He urged people to show consideration and understanding for the authorities carrying out their duties.
Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch said she was closely following developments and remained in contact with relevant authorities. Police and rescue services continue to work at the scene as investigations proceed; the public is asked to avoid the area and follow official guidance.
