Stolen SUV Crashes Into Marked Patrol Car in Niagara Falls
Chaos erupted Thursday night in Niagara Falls when a stolen Kia Sportage driven by two 14-year-olds crashed into a marked police cruiser after losing control and striking a utility pole.
What happened: Around 9 p.m., officers spotted the hot-wired Sportage traveling on Niagara Street near Portage Road. The vehicle lost control at Osborne Court, struck a telephone pole, rolled and then collided head-on with a patrol car. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and debris was scattered across the roadway.
Injuries and response: A 14-year-old female passenger was ejected from the SUV and taken to Oishei Children's Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The 14-year-old male driver was transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital for treatment. The officer in the cruiser was not seriously injured. Emergency crews closed portions of the street to clear wreckage and conduct the investigation.
Ongoing investigation: Police say the Kia had been reported stolen earlier. Investigators examined skid marks and nearby surveillance footage as they work to determine how the teens obtained the vehicle. Because the subjects are minors, authorities declined to release their names; criminal charges are expected once the inquiry progresses.
Community leaders and residents expressed concern about a recent rise in youth-involved auto thefts and urged increased supervision and prevention efforts. The investigation remains active and officials say additional details will be released when appropriate.
