MELBOURNE, Australia — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will travel to Australia on Wednesday, marking his first trip to the country since he assumed office last year. The visit was announced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday; few itinerary details were released.

Prabowo previously visited Australia in August while serving as minister of defense and as president-elect. He was inaugurated as president in October.

Albanese and Prabowo met in Jakarta in May during the annual Australia–Indonesia leaders' meeting, which took place on the prime minister's first overseas trip following his reelection. That meeting helped set the tone for closer cooperation on regional security, trade and people-to-people ties.

"I am delighted to host President Prabowo in Australia and to return the warm and generous hospitality he provided when I visited Jakarta earlier this year," Albanese said in a statement.

"Australia and Indonesia share a deep trust and unbreakable bond as neighbors, partners and friends. Together we are committed to working for a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific," he added.

Australia regards Indonesia — its nearest neighbour after Papua New Guinea — as one of its most important bilateral relationships. The visit underscores the two countries' ongoing cooperation on regional stability, economic ties and people-to-people exchanges.

It is also customary for newly elected Australian prime ministers to include a visit to Jakarta among their early overseas trips, reflecting the importance Canberra places on its relationship with Jakarta.
