YouTube TV to Issue $20 Credit After Disney Channels Pulled During Contract Dispute

YouTube TV will issue a $20 credit after Disney-owned channels such as ESPN and ABC were removed on Oct. 30 amid failed contract negotiations. In an email on Nov. 9, the service said primary account holders will receive instructions by email. The credit must be claimed at tv.youtube.com (not the mobile app); accounts billed via Google Play or other third parties will receive the credit automatically. YouTube TV and Disney say they are still negotiating.

What happened: YouTube TV told subscribers it will issue a $20 credit after Disney-owned channels — including ESPN and ABC — were removed from the service on Oct. 30 when the two companies failed to reach a new carriage agreement.

In an email to customers sent on Nov. 9, YouTube TV said: "We know it’s been disappointing to lose Disney content, and we want you to know we deeply appreciate your patience. In light of the disruption, we’re offering our subscribers a $20 credit."

Both sides' statements: Disney said in a note to employees on Nov. 7 that it had offered concessions and proposed terms that would cost "less overall than the terms of our recently expired license." YouTube TV, owned by Google, countered that Disney proposed "costly economic terms that would raise prices on YouTube TV customers and give our customers fewer choices." YouTube TV also said it is "working in good faith to negotiate a deal with Disney."

How to claim the $20 credit

YouTube TV said the credit will be available to primary account holders (also called family managers) if the Disney channels remain unavailable for an "extended period of time." Primary account holders should receive an email with instructions within days. The credit must be claimed on a web browser — it cannot be accessed in the mobile app.

  1. Go to tv.youtube.com on a web browser and sign in (not available in the mobile app).
  2. Select your profile picture.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. In the left menu select Updates.
  5. Click Claim credit.

After claiming, you’ll see a confirmation that the credit will be applied to your next bill. If you are billed through Google Play or another third-party provider (not billed directly through YouTube TV), the credit will be applied automatically; check the Billing tab in Settings to confirm your billing method.
