Yahoo and Yahoo Mail suffered widespread outages on Monday, with DownDetector reports surging shortly after 12:00 p.m. Yahoo confirmed mail access problems and said engineers are investigating. The disruption follows recent Cloudflare incidents that briefly knocked major sites offline. Other significant 2025 outages include YouTube in October and WhatsApp in February.

Yahoo and its Yahoo Mail service experienced widespread outages on Monday afternoon, leaving many users unable to access email ahead of the holiday season.

According to DownDetector, reports of problems for both services spiked shortly after 12:00 p.m. local time. Yahoo, which is headquartered in California and says it serves roughly one billion users worldwide each day, acknowledged the disruption in a brief statement.

“We are currently aware of technical difficulties affecting mail access for some users. Our team is actively investigating the cause, and we will provide further updates as they become available. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience.”

A company spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment from The Independent. Meanwhile, many users turned to other social platforms to report issues and express frustration: “I can’t access any of my mail!” and “I’m one of the thousands. Not happy!” were typical reactions.

Recent Context: A Spate Of Web Disruptions

The outage is the latest in a series of high-profile internet interruptions this month. On December 5, Cloudflare — a major web infrastructure provider — suffered a brief outage that temporarily took several popular sites offline, including X, Substack and Canva. Visitors at the time reported seeing “500 Internet Server Error” messages across affected sites.

About two-and-a-half weeks earlier, another Cloudflare incident caused widespread downtime for sites that rely on its services. At the time, Cloudflare said it was “aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers,” and promised further updates as the investigation continued.

Other notable outages in 2025 have included interruptions to YouTube in October and WhatsApp in February, underscoring growing concerns about the resilience of internet infrastructure and third-party hosting services.

What Users Should Do

If you’re affected, try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or accessing Yahoo Mail via a different browser or the mobile app. For persistent issues, check DownDetector or Yahoo’s official status page for updates and estimated restoration times.
