Tidal Surge Batters Canary Islands: 3 Dead, 15 Injured on Tenerife

Three people were killed and 15 were injured after a tidal surge produced powerful waves along Tenerife’s coast, officials said. Incidents on Saturday occurred in La Guancha, Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and a third victim was found off a Granadilla beach. Authorities had warned of the tidal surge and strong winds and urged people to avoid coastal areas and not to risk taking photos or videos of the rough seas.

Three people have died and 15 others were injured after powerful waves swept parts of Tenerife during a tidal surge, authorities said Sunday.

Emergency services reported that the incidents took place on Saturday along the island’s northern and eastern coasts. A man and a woman were among those swept into the sea during separate incidents in the municipalities of La Guancha, Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where rescuers also treated several injured people. In a separate case, a third man was later found dead, floating near a beach in Granadilla.

Four separate incidents

Officials said the 15 injuries occurred across four different incidents. Local emergency teams responded to multiple scenes and provided first aid before transporting the most serious cases to hospital. Authorities have not released further personal details while investigations and recovery operations continue.

Warnings and safety advice

Authorities had issued warnings about the tidal surge and strong winds, urging residents and visitors to stay off coastal paths and beaches. Officials specifically warned people not to risk their safety to take photos or videos of the rough seas and advised keeping a safe distance from cliffs and shoreline during hazardous conditions.

Local emergency services asked the public to follow official guidance and monitor weather alerts as conditions remain unstable.
