A murder investigation is under way after a 40-year-old man was shot dead on Friday evening in East Acton while a memorial service was taking place. Up to 40–50 people, including children, were attending the gathering when the shooting occurred.

The Metropolitan Police said officers and London Ambulance Service crews were called to the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street at 19:47 GMT after members of the public reported hearing multiple gunshots. Despite the efforts of emergency medics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made and a police cordon remains in place on Braybrook Street as detectives continue their inquiries. The victim's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a man whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence. We believe between 40 and 50 people, including children, were present when this happened. Someone knows what happened and we need them to come forward."

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to establish the precise cause of death; detectives believe the victim sustained a gunshot wound. Officers have asked anyone who was in the area around Erconwald Street, Braybrook Street, the surrounding roads or Wormwood Scrubs playground between 18:00 and 20:00 to think carefully about what they saw.

Investigators are particularly keen to hear about sightings of people carrying or concealing weapons, anyone acting suspiciously on bicycles, or vehicles being driven at speed. Police also want to receive any photographs, video, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage, and relevant material seen on social media.

"However insignificant it may seem, the smallest piece of information could prove crucial in helping us establish what happened and identify those responsible," the force said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police. The cordon remains in place on Braybrook Street while inquiries continue.
