Russian airstrikes across Ukraine on Saturday killed at least two people and wounded 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
Two fatalities were reported in the south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhya, and strikes were also recorded in Kyiv and in the regions of Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Mykolaiv and Vinnytsia. Zelensky warned that "it is essential that our partners not forget: Russia is escalating every single day," and called on the United States and the European Union to impose tougher sanctions.
The president also confirmed that Ukrainian drones struck the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia's southern Krasnodar region and a defense plant in the Rostov region.
These latest attacks follow a deadly wave of Russian drone strikes on Kyiv on Friday, in which seven people were killed and 59 were injured. Russian President Vladimir Putin has since threatened heavier retaliation, describing it as a response to a major Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow that coincided with Russia's parliamentary election day.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022, and international leaders continue to weigh calls for increased economic and political pressure on Moscow.
