Russian drone and missile strikes on Sept. 24 struck Kyiv and northeastern Ukraine, killing eight people and damaging civilian infrastructure, officials said. The attacks included damage to a maternity clinic in the capital and a vegetable storage facility at a farm in Kharkiv region.

Moscow has intensified its air campaign in recent months, deploying faster, harder-to-intercept drones while Ukraine faces shortages of systems capable of downing ballistic missiles. Ukraine's air force said the overnight barrage included an unspecified number of hypersonic and ballistic missiles, some 282 drones and other weapons.

"As people were sleeping, flashes from explosions lit up the sky," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram, as he attended the UN General Assembly in New York.
Police in Kyiv reported damage to nine homes, a post office, warehouses and dozens of cars. Two people died in the strikes on Kyiv, President Zelenskiy said; municipal officials reported eight more people were injured. City mayor Vitali Klitschko said one of the dead was found in the parking lot of the maternity hospital.

Maternity Hospital Damaged
Officials said part of the hospital's façade, windows and doors were damaged but that no patients or medical staff were hurt. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a separate strike on a vegetable storage facility at a farm killed six people and wounded 12, prosecutors said.

Authorities in the northwestern Rivne region reported infrastructure damage from overnight strikes that continued into Thursday morning, and the Volyn region bordering Poland also came under attack, officials added.

"Right now, the United States has the opportunity to respond strongly. We need ballistic interceptors to protect lives," Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram.
Speaking to a gathering of diaspora Ukrainians, Zelenskiy said Ukraine had secured an agreement for a supply of missiles for Patriot air‑defence systems but declined to name the supplier. "Today we agreed — I won't say with whom — on a package of missiles for the Patriot systems. An important decision, very important. There is a result," he said in a video posted to social media.

Russia's defence ministry said its forces hit Ukrainian defence facilities, logistics and telecommunications centres, and vessels used by the military.
In the Black Sea port of Odesa, regional military administration head Serhiy Lysak said overnight strikes damaged a medical facility and shattered windows in nearby houses and a school.
Neighboring countries also reported related incidents: Moldova's President Maia Sandu said four Russian drones crossed into Moldovan airspace and at least one exploded; Moldova's defence minister warned that such incursions pose a real danger to people and national security. Romania reported a drone crash on its territory, and NATO member Poland said it scrambled aircraft twice on Thursday in response to the attacks on Ukraine.
The situation remains fluid as Ukraine and its partners assess the damage and push for additional air-defence resources to protect civilian populations and critical infrastructure.
