Malone Lam, 22, pleaded guilty after prosecutors say he and associates stole 4,100 Bitcoin (about $245 million at the time) in August 2024 using social-engineering impersonations of Google and Gemini representatives. Instead of hiding the proceeds, Lam allegedly spent heavily in Miami — buying more than 30 luxury cars, renting mansions, hiring security, and splurging on private jets and nightlife. Law enforcement traced those purchases, and as part of his plea agreement authorities seized much of his remaining property, including 28 exotic cars. Lam faces up to 20 years in federal prison and potential deportation.

A 22-year-old identified in court filings as Malone Lam pleaded guilty after prosecutors say he used proceeds from a massive cryptocurrency theft to bankroll an extravagant lifestyle rather than hide the funds. Federal officials describe the case as one of the largest crypto thefts tied to the United States.

How The Theft Allegedly Happened

According to U.S. court documents and reporting by ABC7, the theft occurred in August 2024. Prosecutors say Lam and a coordinated international group used sophisticated social-engineering tactics, impersonating representatives from Google and the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange. By falsely claiming the victim's Google Drive had been compromised, they reportedly tricked the investor into revealing security verification codes, which allowed the group to withdraw 4,100 Bitcoin — valued at roughly $245 million at the time.

Lavish Spending Spree

Rather than concealing the proceeds, Lam allegedly spent lavishly in Miami. Prosecutors say he and associates purchased more than 30 luxury vehicles, filling driveways with brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz, with individual prices ranging from about $100,000 to nearly $4 million. Lam is also accused of spending roughly $2 million on a luxury watch, booking private jets, renting mansions, hiring round-the-clock security and regularly splurging on VIP nightclub services — at times reportedly spending as much as $569,000 in a single evening.

Investigation, Plea And Seizure

Investigators say the high-profile nature of the purchases helped law enforcement trace the money and identify suspects. Lam pleaded guilty to a federal racketeering conspiracy charge in September 2026 and faces up to 20 years in prison and potential deportation. As part of his plea agreement, authorities have seized much of his remaining property, including 28 exotic cars purchased with the stolen bitcoin.

Officials note that because of the speed and volatility involved in moving and liquidating Bitcoin across wallets, a significant portion of the stolen funds appears to have been spent or otherwise lost and cannot be recovered.
