Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) said on Newsmax that President Donald Trump's announcement to create an "AI Force" and appoint an artificial intelligence czar underscores the need for the United States to remain at the forefront of AI development.
Speaking on Newsmax's "Wake Up America Early," Murphy described AI as both an unparalleled opportunity and a potential national-security risk that requires urgent attention from policymakers at home and abroad.
"This has to be done because this is a technology that, in some ways, is the most exhilarating thing, I think, in my lifetime or will be," Murphy said. "But it also truly could be the most terrifying. We have to stay ahead of this."
Murphy emphasized that human oversight must remain central to AI deployment, citing examples where systems behaved in unintended ways. "We're at the nascent stages of this," he said. "We have to get control about this. This is a real issue that desperately needs national and international attention."
Trump announced on Saturday that he intends to form an "AI Force," likening the initiative to the Space Force established during his first term, and said he will name an AI czar soon. The president has offered few specifics on the new body's structure or responsibilities.
While Murphy supports policies to preserve U.S. leadership, he and the administration have signaled opposition to regulations they believe could stifle innovation. Trump stated his administration would "not in any way hinder or stifle" industry growth and would use existing criminal and civil laws to address misuse.
Murphy said warnings from prominent AI researchers — including Geoffrey Hinton — deserve serious consideration rather than partisan dismissal. He also said briefings with U.S. intelligence officials raised concerns about Beijing's AI efforts and stressed that resistance to building data centers could hamper U.S. competitiveness.
"This is a real concern," Murphy said, likening the strategic rivalry to the technological competition with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. "We have to be in charge of this. We have to be the world's leader."
