The U.S. Forest Service has opened a public comment period on a proposed open-pit rare earth mine adjacent to Mato Tipila (Bear Lodge), a landscape considered sacred by the Lakota and other Indigenous Nations for its deep cultural and spiritual significance.

Rare Earth Minerals Inc. has submitted a plan of operations for the Bear Lodge Rare Earth Project that would develop an open-pit mine of more than 100 acres and operate for nearly 20 years. Project documents place the site roughly 12 miles north of Sundance, Wyoming, with a development footprint covering about 1,060 acres of U.S. Forest Service land and roughly 640 acres of private property.

Environmental and Health Concerns
