Former Trump White House adviser turned MAGA podcaster Steve Bannon warned on Thursday that Republicans risk losing control of the U.S. Senate this fall, blaming what he described as weak grassroots energy and an overreliance on traditional TV ad spending.
Speaking on his WarRoom program, Bannon criticized the party’s ground operations and donor-driven strategies, arguing that many MAGA supporters are not motivated to take part in door-to-door canvassing or other voter engagement efforts in key battleground states.
“Because now it has to be a showdown. Here’s the reason: we’re going to lose the Senate in the fall anyway. No grassroots leader, none of the grassroots phalanx, the hoplites — nobody’s excited about going door to door and doing voter engagement, as Caroline knows more than anybody,”
Bannon said the old playbook of spending hundreds of millions on TV ads on networks like Fox and CNN no longer produces reliable results and urged Senate campaigns to adapt. He pointed to recent contests in Texas and Virginia as evidence that grassroots energy still exists but must be properly mobilized.
He repeated his warnings in a separate segment with Jack Posobiec, where he sharply criticized outside donor groups and so-called independent funds. Bannon accused these groups of pouring roughly $150 million into Texas efforts that, he said, undermined grassroots organizing and targeted figures such as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
“You’re going to lose the Senate. We’re telling everybody to put their freaking pencils down in North Carolina, in Maine, in Ohio, all of it. Michigan, you want to play hardball? We’ll say, ‘Hey, look, it’s just as bad having Democrats in charge. So let’s just have Democrats in power,'”
He also threatened that MAGA voters would withhold effort in multiple battleground states if Republican officeholders or donor groups move against former President Donald J. Trump or marginalize MAGA priorities. Bannon framed the dispute as a choice between renewed grassroots mobilization or electoral losses across several pivotal states.
