Politico reports that some Trump administration officials have privately questioned Kevin Hassett's suitability to become the next Federal Reserve chair, saying he has mostly served as a public messenger for the White House. President Trump has reportedly narrowed his choice to Hassett or former Fed governor Kevin Warsh. Critics worry Hassett may lack the experience and independent credibility to replace Jerome Powell; a decision is expected early next year.

WASHINGTON — Several Trump administration officials have privately expressed reservations about naming National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett as the next Federal Reserve chair, Politico reported on Dec. 16, citing three people familiar with the discussions.

According to the report, some insiders say Hassett has been most effective as a public messenger for President Donald Trump's economic agenda rather than as an independent policymaker — a perception that has prompted doubts about his readiness to lead the U.S. central bank.

Candidates Narrowed

President Trump told the Wall Street Journal last week that he has narrowed his search for the Fed chair to either Kevin Hassett or former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh. Sources told Politico that concerns inside the administration focus on whether Hassett has the central-bank experience and independent credibility necessary to succeed current Chair Jerome Powell.

Politico cited three people familiar with the discussions as the source for the report.

White House officials and advisers expect the president to announce his decision early next year.
