A federal grand jury indicted 35-year-old Corey Johnson on Nov. 20 after authorities say he phoned in a bomb threat at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Nov. 7 when he could not pay to exit short-term parking. An FBI affidavit says the caller demanded staff "page Hassan," threatened violence and referred to a bomb; deputies traced the number to Johnson and arrested him about an hour later. Johnson admitted making the calls and reportedly said "something like that" when asked if he claimed a bomb was present. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and significant fines.

Corey Johnson, 35, of Alexandria, Louisiana, was indicted on Nov. 20 by a federal grand jury after prosecutors say he phoned in a bomb threat at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Nov. 7 when he could not pay to exit the short-term parking lot.

What happened

According to an FBI affidavit and a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Johnson attempted to leave the short-term parking area in his Jeep but could not complete payment. Airport parking staff and airport police repeatedly asked him to move his vehicle out of the exit lane; deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office were summoned and Johnson agreed to shift his vehicle so he could obtain funds to leave.

The alleged threats

Later that evening, while the vehicle remained trapped in the lot, the airport’s Aviation Communications (AVCOM) center received a threatening phone call at about 9:50 p.m. The caller demanded that the operator "page Hassan," and said, "If you do not page him, we have a bomb. We have the bomb if you do not page him."

At approximately 10:35 p.m., the same number contacted AVCOM again. The caller is alleged to have attempted to disguise his voice and used violent language, saying, "Didn't I tell you, you stupid f--- b---, I will cut your f--- throat!" The caller again demanded, "page Hasaan," and said, "I want him to bring the bomb to level three."

Investigation and arrest

Deputies traced the calls by pinging the number and located the phone outside the airport’s north terminal. Investigators say they matched the device to Johnson. When officers returned to the parking lot at about 10:52 p.m., they found Johnson in the driver's seat of his vehicle and arrested him. Police told investigators the phone rang from inside Johnson's seat when they called the threatening number.

The affidavit states Johnson admitted making two calls that evening. When asked whether he had said a bomb was present, he reportedly replied, "something like that."

Charges and possible penalties

Johnson was indicted on a federal charge of willfully conveying a bomb threat. If convicted, the U.S. Attorney’s Office says he could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. An arraignment was scheduled for Dec. 3.

Johnson's attorney, Claude Kelly, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
