Auckland Man Allegedly Swallows Limited‑Edition Fabergé “Octopussy” Pendant — Police Wait for It to Pass

A 32-year-old man in Auckland is facing an unusual legal and medical situation after police say he grabbed and swallowed a limited-edition Fabergé pendant inside a jewellery shop.

Officers detained the suspect at Partridge Jewellers moments after the alleged incident and are monitoring him while they wait for the pendant to be expelled naturally. The item is valued at NZ$33,500 (about £14,500).

The 3.3-inch locket, marketed as “Octopussy,” was inspired by the 1983 James Bond film. It is one of only 50 produced: crafted from 18‑carat gold, finished with green enamel and set with 60 white diamonds and 15 blue sapphires.

The hard, encrusted gems make the item likely to be painful to pass through the digestive tract, so police arranged a medical assessment and have an officer assigned to continuously monitor the man while he remains in custody.

Insp Grae Anderson said: "The Auckland city beat team responded minutes later, arresting the man inside the store. At the time of his arrest he underwent a medical assessment, and an officer is assigned to constantly monitor the man. At this stage the pendant has not been recovered."

Police say they will recover the pendant if and when it emerges. The man also faces separate allegations: the theft of an iPad from the same shop on 12 November and the theft of cat litter and flea treatment worth NZ$100 from a private address on 13 November.

The suspect appeared in an Auckland court on Saturday and did not enter a plea to a charge of theft. He is due back in court on Monday after authorities expect the item to have been expelled.
