Tragedy on the M5: 18-Year-Old Fatally Struck After Exiting Ambulance

An 18-year-old man died after being struck by a vehicle on the M5 in North Somerset late on Sunday, Nov. 30. The collision occurred at about 11:04 p.m. on the northbound carriageway between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon, police said.

The man had exited an ambulance that had stopped to provide further treatment while he was being taken to hospital. Members of the public reported someone on the motorway and an off-duty officer stopped to help move the patient off the carriageway. He was then struck by a southbound car and, despite attempts to save him, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has not been publicly named. Avon and Somerset Police say the family have been informed and are being supported by a specially trained liaison officer.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family at such a devastating time. We will support them in any way we can,” Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall said. She added that the incident has had a significant effect on officers and ambulance crews, and that welfare arrangements are in place for staff and any members of the public who were involved or witnessed the incident.

Jane Whichello of the South Western Ambulance Service offered condolences to the family and thanked crews and police colleagues for their efforts, noting that staff put their own safety at risk to help the patient and to reduce danger to passing motorists. She also expressed concern for the driver of the vehicle involved.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The M5 was closed while emergency services responded and reopened the following morning after investigators completed initial work.
