New Footage Shows National Guard Exchanging Fire After Deadly Ambush Near White House

A newly released video shows National Guard members returning fire during a deadly ambush in downtown Washington, D.C., roughly three blocks from the White House. The clip captures the chaotic moments immediately after a shooter attacked two troops.

The footage appears to show the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, holding a revolver as gunfire erupts. A U.S. soldier is visible lying on the ground while other guardsmen fire back. The video was recorded by a driver passing the scene moments before the suspect was shot, subdued and taken into custody.

Two National Guard members, Andrew Wolfe and Sarah Beckstrom, were seriously wounded in the assault. Beckstrom later died; Wolfe remains in critical condition.

On Friday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington announced that prosecutors will add a first-degree murder charge in Beckstrom’s death in addition to multiple counts of assault with intent to kill related to the attack.

Authorities say Lakanwal is an Afghan national who worked with U.S. operations in Afghanistan. He reportedly entered the United States under “Operation: Allies Welcome” in 2021 and was later granted asylum earlier this year.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances of the ambush, including the motive and any possible connections. Officials have indicated that further charges or developments are possible as the investigation proceeds.
