Two National Guard Members Shot Near White House

Two members of the U.S. National Guard were shot near the White House Wednesday afternoon, just before 3:00 p.m. D.C. police say a suspect has been taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey posted on X that the Guardsmen "have succumbed to the wounds," calling them "brave West Virginians" who "lost their lives in the service of their country."

FBI Director Kash Patel provided a differing update, saying the two service members were in "critical condition" and that the incident will be treated as an "assault on officer." Authorities have not yet released a definitive medical update to reconcile the conflicting statements.

The National Guard troops had been deployed to Washington, D.C., at the direction of President Donald Trump to assist local authorities amid concerns about crime in the city.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump wrote: "The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!"

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said DHS is coordinating with local law enforcement to gather additional information. Washington, D.C., police have detained a suspect, and federal and local officials say they will release more details as the investigation progresses.

Note: Initial public statements contained conflicting information about the service members' condition. Authorities have indicated that updates will follow as investigators and medical teams confirm facts.
