All 24 Kebbi Schoolgirls Rescued, President Says; Calls for Urgent Security Boost

President Bola Tinubu said all 24 schoolgirls taken from a Kebbi state school on Nov. 17 have been rescued, correcting earlier reports that listed 25 missing. Authorities disclosed no details about the rescue operation. Tinubu urged an immediate increase in security deployments to prevent further kidnappings. The Kebbi case is part of a wider wave of mass abductions, including a separate raid in Niger state that seized over 300 people, about 50 of whom escaped.

President Bola Tinubu announced Tuesday that all 24 schoolgirls abducted from a school in Kebbi state on Nov. 17 have been rescued. Police had initially reported 25 students missing, but the presidential statement clarified that 24 pupils were recovered. Authorities released no details on how the rescue operation was conducted.

"I am relieved that all 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must, as a matter of urgency, put more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping," President Tinubu said in the statement.

The incident in Kebbi, in northwestern Nigeria, comes amid a recent surge of mass kidnappings across the country. In a separate attack last Friday, gunmen raided a Catholic school in north-central Niger state and abducted more than 300 students and staff; about 50 students managed to escape over the weekend.

Officials have not provided further information about the identities of the rescued students, whether any injuries occurred, or whether arrests were made in connection with the Kebbi abduction. The president’s call for an increased security presence underscores ongoing concerns about the safety of schools and vulnerable communities in several regions of Nigeria.
