Bomb threat targets Sen. Elissa Slotkin’s Michigan home after video urging troops to refuse unlawful orders

The Michigan residence of Sen. Elissa Slotkin was the target of a bomb threat on Friday evening, just days after she posted a short video urging service members to refuse unlawful orders. Michigan State Police responded to the report, searched the property and determined there was no immediate danger; the senator was not at home when officers arrived.

A spokesperson for Slotkin thanked Oakland County law enforcement and Michigan State Police for their “swift and professional response.” The U.S. Capitol Police have taken over the investigation and are working to identify and hold accountable whoever made the threat.

Video, reaction and context

The incident followed a video posted by Slotkin earlier in the week that urged military personnel to “stand up for our laws” and to refuse unlawful commands. The clip featured several lawmakers who highlighted their military or intelligence backgrounds, including Sen. Mark Kelly and Representatives Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan and Jason Crow.

In recent weeks, Slotkin and some colleagues have proposed legislation intended to limit a president’s unilateral authority to deploy National Guard forces domestically and to authorize certain military strikes without congressional approval. The short video focused on a call to service members to uphold the law and did not outline those parallel legislative efforts.

Political fallout

The video drew sharp criticism from political opponents. Former President Donald Trump posted on his social platform, calling the lawmakers’ actions “seditious” and asserting they should be arrested and tried. He later wrote that their actions were "punishable by death.” Those comments intensified controversy surrounding the video and preceded the threat at Slotkin’s home.

“It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL,” the statement read. “Their words cannot be allowed to stand — We won't have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET.”

Authorities say the investigation into the bomb threat is ongoing. Officials confirmed there was no immediate danger at the residence and urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
