UC Berkeley Student, 19, Dies After Drowning at Overcrowded Off‑Campus Fraternity Party

A 19-year-old University of California, Berkeley student has died after a near-drowning at an off-campus fraternity party on the night of Nov. 14. Emergency personnel performed CPR at the scene before the student was transported to a local hospital in critical condition; police later announced the student’s death on Nov. 19.
Incident and response
The incident occurred at a recognized Alpha Delta Phi chapter house on Greek Row, located at 2422 Prospect Street. Officers arriving that night found a large gathering of more than 300 people and observed conditions consistent with overcrowding and heavy alcohol consumption. Firefighters administered life-saving measures at the scene before the student was taken to hospital.
Investigation and enforcement
Investigators have said they do not suspect foul play and have found no evidence of hazing. Local authorities issued a civil notice of violation to the fraternity for "public nuisances during loud and unruly gatherings," and the Berkeley Fire Department cited the organization for violating an Indoor Entertainment Event permit.
Authorities also reported that a 19-year-old on-site fraternity safety coordinator may face charges on suspicion of providing alcohol to minors. The chapter was suspended immediately by national leadership while the investigation continues, and university and law enforcement officials are cooperating as inquiries proceed.
"We are saddened by this tragic news and extend our condolences to the student’s family and friends," UC Berkeley said in a statement. The Berkeley Police Department offered its "deepest condolences," adding that "the harm felt by this tragic loss is profound."
The victim has not been publicly identified. The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau and local departments have not released additional details pending the ongoing investigation.
