Texas law professor missing after Veterans Day hike on Blood Mountain

Charles Hosch, a 67-year-old Texas law professor, has been missing since Tuesday, Nov. 11, after setting out on a hike in the northern Georgia mountains. Authorities say his last known location was the Byron Herbert Reece Trail near the summit of Blood Mountain, where witnesses reported him descending from the peak. His vehicle was found at the trailhead.

Search efforts and description

The Union County Sheriff’s Office and Hosch’s law firm, Hosch & Morris, PLLC, have shared details about the search. As of Sunday, Nov. 16, search operations included drone and K-9 teams and involved approximately 95 search-and-rescue personnel. Local officials are asking anyone in the area to check trail-camera footage from or near the Byron Herbert Reece Trail and surrounding Blood Mountain area.

Physical description and clothing: Hosch is about 6-foot-1 and roughly 200 lbs. He was last seen wearing khaki pants, a camel-colored sweater and a dark green jacket.

Background and family

Hosch is a Harvard Law School graduate who spent more than three decades mentoring law students at SMU Dedman School of Law. He practiced for 35 years as a partner at Strasburger & Price, LLP before co-founding Hosch & Morris, PLLC. He is a former Eagle Scout, a longtime volunteer with the Scouts, and a Sunday school teacher at University Park United Methodist Church.

It is really heartening to see so many people working so hard to bring my dad home, his daughter Julia Hosch-Singh said.

Hosch has been married to his wife Beth for 42 years and recently became a grandfather for the first time.

Authorities urge hunters, hikers and property owners near Blood Mountain to check any trail- or game-camera footage taken on or near the Byron Herbert Reece Trail. Trail-camera images could provide critical information; officials request that anyone with relevant footage share it promptly.
