Maryville Motor Officer Critically Injured in Collision with State Trooper During Vice President Vance Motorcade

During a protective motorcade for Vice President JD Vance in Maryville, Tennessee, a Maryville motor officer and a Tennessee state trooper collided Friday night. The motor officer was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and is in critical condition; the trooper was evaluated on scene and not transported. The U.S. Secret Service said the protectees were not impacted and is monitoring the situation. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating.

Collision During Protective Motorcade Leaves Officer Critically Injured

Two law enforcement officers were involved in a collision Friday night while providing security for Vice President JD Vance's motorcade in Maryville, Tennessee. Maryville officials said one officer from the Maryville Police Department's motor unit was critically injured and transported for emergency care; the other involved was a Tennessee state trooper who was evaluated on scene and not transported to a hospital.

Maryville police characterized the event as occurring "during an executive protection mission involving multiple law enforcement agencies." A U.S. Secret Service spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that Vice President Vance was part of the motorcade and said the agency is closely monitoring the incident. The Secret Service emphasized that the protectees were not impacted.

Katherine Pierce, resident agent in charge of the Knoxville office of the U.S. Secret Service, said: 'The U.S. Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic incident involving local law enforcement personnel that occurred this evening in Maryville, Tennessee, while they were supporting a protective motorcade movement. The protectees were not impacted by this incident.'

Special Agent Jason Pack, director of communications for the Tennessee Department of Safety, said an ambulance that was part of the motorcade stopped immediately to render medical aid. The injured motor officer was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for further treatment; Maryville police officials reported the officer remains in critical condition.

Paramedics evaluated the state trooper at the scene, and he was not taken to a hospital, officials said. Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp asked the community to keep the injured officer, the officer’s family and medical staff in their thoughts and thanked residents for their outpouring of support.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the collision. City officials said they will release additional information as it becomes available.
