Truck Strikes Shoppers at Busy Bucheon Market

A truck drove into a crowd at an outdoor market in Bucheon, just outside Seoul, shortly before 11 a.m., killing two people and injuring 18, city officials said.

The two victims were pronounced dead at a hospital after the crash. Bucheon’s municipal government reported that nine of the 18 injured sustained serious injuries; it was not immediately clear whether any of those injuries were life-threatening.

Sequence of Events

Investigators say witnesses told them the vehicle first reversed about 28 meters (92 feet) and then drove forward roughly 150 meters (492 feet), striking pedestrians along the route. The truck became jammed into a storefront amid a jumble of debris, including toppled boxes, clothing and broken signboards. Photos showed the truck’s front-left side mangled and windows shattered.

Investigation Under Way

Police are questioning an unnamed driver in his 60s. Bucheon police official Son Byeong-sam said the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The driver has told authorities his vehicle malfunctioned; officials are reviewing security camera footage and continuing their investigation.

City Response

Mayor Cho Yong-eek said the city will support restoration of damaged facilities, carry out safety inspections and provide psychological assistance to merchants and others who witnessed the crash. Cho’s office said it did not yet have an estimate of property damage or the number of shops affected.

Officials emphasize the investigation is ongoing as they review footage and question witnesses to determine how the incident unfolded.

Authorities later removed the vehicle from the scene to continue forensic checks and reconstruction of the incident. Further updates are expected as police complete their review.
