The M1 is closed in both directions between Barnsley and Hoyland following a crash that occurred just after midnight. Emergency services attended the scene between junctions 37 and 36, and the carriageways remain closed while responders and investigators work.

National Highways said a car left the carriageway and warned that there is currently no estimated time for when the motorway will fully re-open. Drivers are being asked to expect significant delays in the area.

South Yorkshire Police: "We are advising drivers to avoid the area and plan an alternative route if possible."
