Heavy rain continues across Taiwan
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Parts of Taiwan were drenched again on Thursday as a tropical depression that has already caused flooding and landslides lingered near the island, officials said.
Injuries, evacuations and damage
Authorities reported 95 people injured after the system made landfall Wednesday evening in southern Pingtung County. More than 8,500 residents were evacuated from low-lying coastal areas and mountain communities as the storm, Fung-wong, approached.
Rain, winds and local impacts
Near its center the depression produced sustained winds of about 54 kph (34 mph), with stronger gusts recorded in some areas. Northern coastal areas around Yilan have received in excess of 1.065 meters (42 inches) of rain since Monday.
Some of the worst localized impacts were reported in Mingli Village in eastern Hualien County, where an overflowing creek triggered heavy flooding. Floodwaters also forced the closure of a portion of a highway.
Warnings and outlook
Forecasters said heavy rain was likely to continue through Thursday near the northeastern port of Keelung and across greater Taipei. Weather authorities warned of ongoing risks of flooding and landslides in upland areas and urged residents to secure loose objects and watch for flying debris.
Public response
After two days of closures in some locations, many schools and government offices reopened across the island. Emergency teams remain on alert to assist with rescues, evacuations and road clearances.
