Investigators Probe Student After Explosions at School Mosque in North Jakarta

Indonesian authorities said Saturday they are investigating a student suspected of involvement in explosions that injured nearly 100 people at a school mosque in North Jakarta.

The blasts occurred as worshippers were assembling for Friday prayers, triggering panic among those present. Initial reports listed 54 casualties; police later revised the figure to 96 people injured.

Evidence and investigation: National police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said investigators had collected "several pieces of evidence," including writing and traces of powder that could have caused an explosion. Officials have identified one suspect—a student who was himself wounded in the incident—but authorities did not rule out additional suspects. Investigators are also reviewing the suspect's family background and social media activity.

Mayndra Eka Wardhana, a spokesman for the counter-terrorism unit Densus 88, told AFP that investigators searched the suspect's home and are continuing to probe possible motives.

Casualties: Police said 29 victims remain hospitalized, including at least two in intensive care.

Eyewitness account: A 17-year-old student witness, Kinza Ghaisan Rayyan, described confusion after the blasts. "At first we thought it came from some electronic equipment, maybe the sound system... but it turned out the explosion came from under the prayer mat," she told AFP.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances and motive behind the explosions as emergency and forensic teams work at the scene.
