HYDERABAD, India
Early Monday, a truck loaded with concrete stone chips ploughed into a state-run passenger bus near Chevella, Telangana, killing at least 20 people and wounding about two dozen, local officials said.
The government bus was carrying roughly 70 passengers en route to Hyderabad when the truck, traveling from the opposite direction, struck it, district official K. Chandrakala told The Associated Press. The front of the bus was severely crushed, trapping several passengers inside.
Heaps of stone chips and gravel were found inside the vehicle; at least one passenger became buried under the load and was later counted among the dead. Rescue teams worked to cut through the mangled coach to recover victims and survivors.
Rajendra Prasad, superintendent of Chevella hospital, said 20 bodies were moved to the mortuary and will be released to families after identification. The drivers of both vehicles were among the dead.
Three college-going siblings from a family in Tandur also died in the crash. Their grieving father, Yellaiah Goud, asked,
"What will I do without my daughters?"Local footage aired by regional media showed a mother and her infant lying beside one another, both dead.
The bus conductor, known only as Radha, described an "ear-shattering noise when the truck hit the bus." She sustained head injuries and was receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Related crash and safety context
The Chevella collision came a day after a separate crash in Rajasthan, where a minibus struck a parked truck late Sunday, killing at least 15 people and injuring two others. Officials said the Rajasthan passengers had been returning to Jodhpur after visiting the pilgrimage town of Kolayat; senior officials reported that among the dead were 10 women, four children and the driver.
Senior police officer Kundan Kanwaria said the Rajasthan driver had attempted to overtake another vehicle before colliding with the parked truck. Authorities noted that vehicles left alongside highways without warning lights or reflectors remain a recurring hazard and have contributed to several deadly nighttime collisions in recent years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the families affected by both accidents. The Rajasthan crash came less than three weeks after a suspected short circuit sparked a fast-moving fire on another passenger bus in the state, which authorities say killed at least 20 people.
