The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it will re-examine original CCTV footage linked to the unsolved murder of BBC presenter Jill Dando, 27 years after she was killed outside her home in Fulham.
Dando, a well-known television presenter and journalist, was shot once on the doorstep of her home in Gowan Avenue in April 1999. Despite one of the largest and most high-profile murder inquiries in modern British history, the case remains unresolved.
New Technical Review
A Met spokesperson said recent advances in CCTV enhancement technology have "provided investigators with the opportunity to re-examine original footage from Putney Bridge train station." That footage reportedly includes an unidentified man seen sprinting in the area about 20 minutes after the shooting.
Officers stressed the work is a technical review within ongoing inquiries and should not be interpreted as a new investigation or as indicating a specific line of inquiry.
Case Background
Dando was born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, and worked at the BBC for 14 years. She was 37 when she was killed on her Fulham doorstep.
Soon after her death a caller of Serbian descent contacted the BBC claiming the killing was a revenge act for the UK-backed NATO bombing of Serbia's state broadcaster in Belgrade. In 2001 Barry George was convicted of Dando's murder, served eight years in prison and was later acquitted at a retrial in 2008.
Several people close to Dando — including her partner Alan Farthing, her former partner and BBC editor Bob Wheaton, and her agent Jon Roseman — were interviewed during the original inquiry and later ruled out as suspects.
